Recently, a Jeevy Computers’ customer was contacted by a phone scammer who identified themselves as being from “Microsoft” in an attempt to gain access to this person’s computer. The scam worked, and, once in there, the caller was able to steal our customer’s personal and financial information, completely compromising this person’s identity, privacy, and safety.
Cybercriminal activity is a very serious problem that’s becoming more and more prevalent every day. The scammers are extremely sophisticated and will prey upon anyone. Even Jeevy Computers has been the target of an attempted “Microsoft” scammer!
We cannot overstate this fact enough: Microsoft, Google, and other reputable companies will never, EVER, call you to request access to your computer. If you, as the user, require their support, you must solicit their help by placing a request on the official website of the appropriate company.
If you ever receive an unsolicited call or email from someone regarding an issue with your computer, DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION. Be forewarned: these individuals can be very convincing and will use various scare tactics to try and gain access to your computer. For instance, they may say that your machine has a virus. Or, that you owe them money. They may even say they need your usernames and passwords for your online accounts.
Immediately hang up the phone or ignore the email. Then, go directly to the official website of Microsoft, or Google, or whatever company the caller said they represented, and contact the customer support department to report the incident and verify that they were NOT the party that contacted you.
